Aldersgate and Carolina Farm Trust are proud to collaborate on a major agricultural and cultural initiative that will continue the Aldersgate-led transformation of Charlotte’s east side. Introducing the Urban Farm at Aldersgate – a mission to nourish, educate and inspire our community, while continuing to foster intergenerational, multicultural connectivity.

Spanning 6.7 acres, the Urban Farm at Aldersgate
will serve as a food source – and learning lab – for the eastside community and beyond.
Both EBT and SNAP will be accepted, ensuring the working farm is truly a resource for all.

FALL 2018

Carolina Farm Trust will design this farm to be first of its kind in Charlotte. Managed by a farmer, the farm will feature traditional farming beds, an aquaponics garden, mobile kitchen, beehives for pollination, and a hoop garden with culturally relevant produce for sale. It will have a farm stand year-round with seasonal produce grown on the farm and other products from local farms (within 100 miles). It is designed to be a hub of community engagement with entertainment, special events and cooking demonstrations.

With so much talk about challenges surrounding issues of economic mobility and food insecurity, this is a tangible solution to a serious problem we face in our East Charlotte neighborhoods. The facts are unconscionable:

Approximately 15%

of Mecklenburg County residents live in poverty (according to Census) with greater percentages in the East Charlotte Service area.

22% of children

in Mecklenburg County live in food insecure homes (Southeastern University Consortium on Hunger, Poverty and Nutrition).

According the National Council on Aging (NCOA)

in the U.S., more than 4.8 million adults over 60 rely on SNAP to stay healthy and make ends meet. On average, they receive $108 per month to help put food on the table.

Lack of access to healthy food

can negatively impact a person’s health and therefore their quality of life.

MECA Realty will match all donations up to $25,000 until September 30

Urban farms can only be successful when the entire community gets behind them. Right now other big urban cities have already invested in urban farms. Austin, Detroit, Denver, and others have taken advantage of available land within their cities to make fresh food accessible to more citizens. We are at a major crossroads in Charlotte. Together we can grow these urban farms to ensure that all citizen have access to healthy, fresh food.

We are excited to announce that MECA Realty has partnered with Carolina Farm Trust to kick start our Urban Farm Initiative.

Now until September 30 every donation made will be matched 1:1 by MECA up to $25,000.

What brought Aldersgate and Carolina Farm Trust together to form the Urban Farm at Aldersgate? Mission fulfillment. It’s our collective belief that farm-to-table food is not a “social-class” privilege; it’s a human right that has measurable health and economic advantages for our community.
Help us achieve our goal and donate today!
